Es kann als Auftakt für das Abenteuer [[Göttliches Spiel]] dienen und direkt vor diesem gespielt werden. Ist letzteres beabsichtigt, empfiehlt es sich, mit 3–6 Abenteurern der Grade 2–4 an den Start zu gehen. Den Hintergrund bildet die gleichnamige Ballade von Ludwig Tieck, die zwar recht lang, aber auch sehr dramatisch und düster-romantisch ist. Da sich der Held im Original allein auf die Suche nach den Zeichen macht, kann es durchaus reizvoll sein, dieses Abenteuer eins zu eins – also mit nur einem Spieler – durchzuspielen.<br /> <br /> Voraussetzung für dieses Abenteuer ist, dass eine der Spielerfiguren Albai und Sohn eines Adligen ist. Der Vater, der sein Ende herannahen fühlt, schickt nach seinem Erben, damit dieser zur Burg seiner Väter zurückkehre. Sie liegt etwas mehr als eine Tagesreise südwestlich der Stadt Crossing mitten im nordalbischen Hügelland. Wenn der Sohn mit seinen Freunden auf der Burg eintrifft, findet er seinen Vater offensichtlich geschwächt und dem Tode nahe vor. Der schlechte körperliche Zustand des Syre und das Alter scheinen seinen Geist in der letzten Zeit zunehmend verwirrt zu haben. Da ihm in Stunden tiefsten Kummers Versdichtungen und Lieder stets ein Trost waren, ist er offensichtlich nur mehr in der Lage, seine Gedanken in düsteren, unheilvollen Versen zu äußern, die gelegentlich von seinen Lippen kommen.<br /> <br /> Aufgabe der Gefährten ist es, die Verse des alten MacLachlan zu deuten.
